Toddlers learn about the world around them through their play. The play is the child’s equivalent to and adults occupation. Learning about the world around them is what the toddler age is all about. The toddler is taking in information through their senses. The brain will then process and store that information for later use. The toddler age is very critical for brain development. During toddler years the brain is forming the thousands of connections that will be used for their lifetime.

There are four areas of development: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social. All of these areas of development are interrelated and will work together in developing the child as a whole. All areas will develop through child’s play.

A variety of toys are needed for proper development

Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch are the senses that the toddlers use to take in information. It is important to stimulate each sense in gathering information. Choose a variety of toys to stimulate your toddler’s development.

When the word educational is spoken, brain development comes to mind. Developing the brain to make children smarter becomes the main focus. What is most often missed, is that intellectual development works together with social, emotional and physical development. Toddlers grow in all four areas at the same time. If their development is behind in one of the four areas there is an impact on the remaining three areas of development.

I am so glad to have found your blog! I travel, a great deal, and I know that bringing my kids is challenging. Challenging doesn’t actually begin to cut it. 11 hours with a 1.11 year old who doesn’t qualify for a seat (just yet) is a rough experience.

I love how you managed to break the toys down into categories suited for development. Not only do I travel a great deal, my wife and I are teachers as well.

I have to ask though, can you share more information about specific toys that are good for air travel?

Thank you Marc, for your visit and comments to my site.

I share your concern about traveling with a toddlers for an extended number of hours. It can be challenging!

In general you want to look at toys that have movement without noise. Colorful toys with many textures work well also. Books are great for traveling as well. Something that your toddler cam interact with works well. As I am sure you know you need a bag of tricks and not just one toy or activity

I am in the process of writing a new blog on toddler toys for air travel. Check back in.

      Best regards, Janice

As someone who works with kids myself, I can definitely agree that there are many areas of a toddler’s development that are important, not just the cognitive side. In fact, I believe toddlers need to learn how to interact socially more than any other skill at this age! I like your toy suggestions. Do you have any suggestions for toys that are easy to travel with? Do you have links to your toy suggestions?
